If the green beans have strings, remove them by cutting off the whole area around them. Wash and cut them in half. Pour the oil into a saucepan. Add the green beans, the peeled sliced tomatoes, sugar, salt and water. Cover. Cook for 1 hour until the green beans are cooked. Only a little sauce should remain in the saucepan by the time the beans are ready to be served. Serve cool.
